Cell phones are for suckers

Whitefish mountain and village have got it going on. People come here to have a good time. The mountain has a lot of terrain and is always full of kids who kick it. One of the few mountains with its own freestyle team, don’t be surprised to see the kid next to you hit a kicker and whip out a back-flip. Skiers out here learn at an early age how to drop cliffs and drop jaws with their mad skills.

Situated in beautiful Montana, the ski resort is only a half hour away from Glacier National Park. The scenery is understandably breathtaking and the people who take it in on a daily basis boast healthy happy attitudes. It’s impossible not to feel warm and welcome while on vacation. And you will not be able to escape meeting some locals and hearing some great ski stories from the good-ole-days.

The terrain, while maintained, does leave a lot for the imaginative. Jumps and bumps and hidden trails make it a favorite for kids and big kids will feel the pressure to perform.

Those who call Whitefish home, spare nothing to entice visitors into their restaurants with yummy smells, and into their shops with handcrafted goods. There are plenty of artists, inspired by the beauty of their own backyard, and finding special keepsakes is practically a given.

A visit to the Hellroaring Saloon is a must. True to its name, it is the place to raise hell after a day on the slopes.

Just over an hour from the Canadian border, Whitefish can be reached by car from Calgary and they have an international airport nearby with flights from several west coast American cities.

The untamed wilderness of Montana is something everyone should experience at least once. A trip out here is less of a circus then a trip to Banff and more quiet and peaceful for those needing to get away from it all. That said, the ski hill really chugs. Fast lifts, plenty of groomed terrain and well-maintained pistes make it safe and varied for all levels of skier. The prices are also much more reasonable than comparably sized resorts in Canada and the U.S. making it a great place to escape for a week with the family.

A trip to Montana is a perfect antidote to stress and tension. You’ll instantly feel the stress drain away as you start to hear noises in the silence, like birds chirping, that you never would have noticed a week before walking from your car to the office. But unlike many of the other resorts in Montana, Whitefish has a lively nightlife and a lot of options for eating and shopping. A real gem in the rugged rough.
