Skiing City-Side

Formerly known as Paskapoo (a much better, and funnier, name if you ask me) C.O.P. looms large over the city of Calgary. A small hill, this place is mainly for those who just can’t go all week without a ski fix. Open every night, kids taking lessons, teens in the half-pipe and racers training are the most common sights. The race program is pretty fierce. Or at least it was back in the day when they still had obstacle courses as part of the race circuit. I once skied one at C.O.P. There the best and I think we should bring them back. Jumps and drops and overs and unders built right into the course. Way cooler than skier cross.

Usually pretty crowded, there are only two lifts but it’s the other facilities that are really worth the visit. The hill boasts a huge half pipe and jumps that are well maintained. Like many small hills these days, C.O.P. is trying to foster a nice relationship with its riders. This year marks the first time they will host an open snowboard competition with a really nice sized $50,000 prize.

And have you ever dreamed of hurling yourself down a slide for grown-ups in a space-like tube. How about a little bobsledding? A taste of luge perhaps? Or maybe, just maybe you would prefer to hurl yourself off an Olympic sized ski jump?

Or, if you’re too chicken piddle for daredevil deeds, check out the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum and view said deeds performed by others.

The view of the city from the top is also pretty awesome. And there’s always a buzz of activity surrounding the place. It would be a great place to take a significant other for a few lessons before heading to the big mountains.

P.S Beware of ice, a bi-product of so much snowmaking.
