Heinrich Harrer’s local

Seefeld, in the Austrian Tyrol, is a mountain for beginners and maybe some lazy intermediates. It has incredible cross-country skiing and was once home to the Nordic competitions in the 64 and 75 Olympics.

But while the mountain is small, yet cozy and relaxing, the town is worth the trip if you aren’t an expert skier looking for thrills.

Seefled is kind of like coacoa on a cold day. The locals chat you up at the bar about the snow conditions. Later, you break out in song. Even later, you are fed sausages, shots and a healthy dose of Austrian pride relayed to you through historical and political stories that somehow also involve skiing.

Without the pretension of a big resort, or the pressure to attract tourists, Seefeld just is. But since visitors find there way here, some great bars and even lounge type restaurants have popped up to keep people warm and social. Romance is a sure thing if that’s in the stars.

The skiing is for beginners. If you want to teach your boyfriend how to ski, it’s a nice romantic place to come. But if your teaching your boyfriend and want to catch a few great runs while he has a long lunch, you won’t find much past a semi-steep groomer.

Getting here: From Innsbruck, like half an hour.
